How to Season a New Cigar Humidor Correctly
Condition the wood slowly and evenly before it shares a controlled environment with your cigars.
Quick Verdict
Season only an empty humidor’s absorbent wood, using one complete method approved for that model. For Boveda B84, size the packets to the humidor’s rated capacity, close the lid for 14 days, ignore interim readings, then discard the seasoning packets and install maintenance humidity control. Never rush the process by wiping or spraying the cedar.
New cedar begins dry. If cigars are loaded before the wood reaches balance, that wood can compete with them for moisture and make the readings difficult to stabilize. Seasoning prepares the empty enclosure; it is different from everyday humidification.
Does Your Humidor Need Seasoning?
Season It
Wooden interiors, cedar trays, cedar shelves, and other unfinished absorbent components normally require conditioning before use.
Do Not Season the Shell
Acrylic, plastic, glass, and metal bodies do not absorb water. Follow the manual for any removable cedar pieces inside them.
Boveda B84 Capacity Guide
| Rated humidor capacity | B84 Size 60 packets | Closed seasoning time |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 25 cigars | 1 packet | 14 days |
| Up to 50 cigars | 2 packets | 14 days |
| Up to 75 cigars | 3 packets | 14 days |
| Up to 100 cigars | 4 packets | 14 days |
The count follows the manufacturer-rated capacity, not the number of cigars owned. For larger or unusual cabinets, use the current Boveda sizing guidance or the humidor maker’s instructions.
Season With Boveda in Six Steps
Empty and Inspect
Remove cigars and all packaging. Check the lid, lining, trays, corners, hygrometer, and accessories before introducing moisture. Use only a dry cloth for loose dust.
Select the Correct Quantity
Match B84 Size 60 packets to the humidor’s rated capacity. Leave dividers and dry cedar trays inside so they condition with the main interior.
Remove Only the Clear Overwrap
Do not cut or open the brown humidity packet itself. Place the unwrapped packets flat or separated inside the empty box rather than tightly stacking them.
Close for 14 Full Days
Keep the lid shut and resist checking the hygrometer. The early reading does not determine completion; the timed B84 process is designed to condition the wood gradually.
Discard the B84 Packets
After 14 days, discard every seasoning packet even if it still feels soft. B84 is a one-time preparation product, not normal cigar-storage humidity control.
Switch to Maintenance
Install one appropriate maintenance system, allow conditions to settle, and then load cigars without blocking tray openings or the humidifier. Do not mix RH levels or combine active systems unless permitted.
What If the Humidor Uses a Refillable Unit?
Follow that manufacturer rather than borrowing the 14-day pack schedule. For example, the manufacturer’s official process prepares its removable humidifiers with unscented demineralized water, installs them in an empty box for 3–4 days, then repeats the cycle until the specified seasoning range is reached. This is a brand-specific system—not a universal shortcut.
Never wipe cedar with a wet sponge by default. Direct surface water can create uneven moisture, staining, swelling, or warping. Open dishes and shot glasses also introduce spill risk without a controlled completion point.
Match the Method to the Construction
KingZendo’s up-to-15 cedar model needs wood conditioning. The up-to-25 LUBINSKI model includes a hygrometer and humidifier whose instructions must be checked. With the 100-cigar acrylic and cedar format, focus on the cedar components rather than treating the nonporous acrylic shell like wood.
Common Seasoning Mistakes
- Seasoning with cigars inside
- Wiping or spraying the cedar
- Using tap or scented water
- Opening the lid every day
- Reusing B84 seasoning packets
- Mixing packs with another humidifier
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should a new humidor be seasoned?
The Boveda B84 method takes 14 days. Manufacturer-supplied humidifiers can require a different schedule, so follow the model instructions.
Can I season a humidor with cigars inside?
No. Seasoning humidity can be too high for storage, and the process is intended to condition an empty wooden interior.
Should I wipe the cedar with distilled water?
No. Direct water is an uncontrolled shortcut that can stain, swell, or warp the wood without conditioning it evenly.
Does an acrylic humidor need seasoning?
The acrylic body does not, but unfinished cedar trays, shelves, or liners may require conditioning according to the manufacturer.
What hygrometer reading should I watch during B84 seasoning?
Do not use interim readings to shorten the process. Keep the box closed for the full 14-day B84 cycle.
Can B84 packets be reused after seasoning?
No. Remove and discard them after the seasoning cycle, then switch to the correct maintenance humidity system.
