Brand History — Zippo

The remarkable story of the world’s most iconic windproof lighter — from a small Pennsylvania town to a global symbol of reliability and American ingenuity.

The Birth of an Icon

In 1932, during the depths of the Great Depression, a young entrepreneur named George G. Blaisdell founded the Zippo Manufacturing Company in Bradford, Pennsylvania. Blaisdell was inspired by an Austrian-made lighter he saw at a local country club. He loved its windproof design but hated its awkward shape and high price. He decided to create something better.

The Original Zippo (1932)

Blaisdell named his new lighter “Zippo” after the sound of a zipper — short, snappy, and easy to remember. He priced it at $1.95 (roughly $45 today) and offered a lifetime guarantee: “It works or we fix it free.” That guarantee remains one of the most famous in American business history.

World War II & The Legendary Guarantee

During World War II, Zippo lighters became essential gear for American soldiers. The company shifted almost entirely to military production. Soldiers loved the windproof flame and the fact that Zippo would repair or replace any lighter — no questions asked — for free.

The famous story: A soldier once sent his Zippo back with a note saying it had been run over by a tank. Zippo fixed it and returned it with a note: “We’re glad it wasn’t you.”

This unconditional guarantee turned Zippo into more than a lighter — it became a symbol of American reliability and trust.

Cultural Impact & Pop Culture

Zippo lighters have appeared in thousands of films, television shows, and music videos. From James Bond to Mad Men, from rock stars to presidents, the Zippo has become an instantly recognizable icon of cool, toughness, and American heritage.

Over 500 Million

Still Made in USA

The Modern Era & Limited Editions

From military tributes and famous movie themes to intricate engravings and armor models, today’s Zippo collection offers something for every collector and gift-giver.

Despite the rise of electronic lighters and vaping, the classic Zippo remains beloved for its reliability, repairability, and unmistakable “click.”
