How to Read S.T. Dupont Lighter Model and Serial Numbers Before You Buy

A product reference identifies the design. A serial identifies the individual piece.

S.T. Dupont listings can contain several numbers that serve completely different purposes. The official product page labels the catalog identifier as REF. Retailers may call it a model number, reference number, SKU, or S.T. Dupont number. A separate serial belongs to the object rather than every lighter of the same design.

Why the Leading Zero Matters—but May Disappear

Official references often include a leading zero. Dealer titles may omit it for catalog convenience. For example, official 016884 may appear as 16884, 020160N as 20160N, and 027700 as 27700. That formatting difference is not automatically suspicious when every remaining character and the product specifications agree.

Keep every letter: a suffix such as the N in 020160N is part of the reference. Do not remove letters, rearrange digits, or assume the opening numbers encode a year. Compare the complete reference exactly as published.

A Five-Step Verification Process

  • Get the claimed reference in writing. Normalize only an obvious leading zero; preserve letters and other suffixes.
  • Match the physical specification. Check collection, lacquer or metal finish, trim color, flame type, dimensions, weight, refill, and flint.
  • Request clear base photographs. Review all markings, spacing, wear, and alteration signs; ask for the full serial privately rather than in a public listing.
  • Cross-check documents. Invoice, warranty card, service receipt, box label, and Digital Passport should describe the same reference and item.
  • Escalate uncertainty. For a valuable or vintage lighter, ask S.T. Dupont or a qualified specialist before payment.

Digital Passport Rule

S.T. Dupont states that eligible Digital Passport products use a unique seven-character serial number. Eligibility also requires a qualifying purchase from April 1, 2025 onward, manufacture in France, and the supplied Passport card; some ranges are excluded. Do not apply this seven-character rule to every vintage or non-eligible lighter.

What Numbers Cannot Prove

A copied serial can be placed on an incorrect object, while a genuine lighter may have worn markings or incomplete paperwork. Numbers are strongest when the construction, finish, dimensions, mechanism, seller history, and documents all tell the same story. Authentication is a consistency exercise, not a single-code lookup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the S.T. Dupont model and serial numbers the same?

No. The model or reference identifies a product configuration, while the serial identifies an individual lighter or eligible product record.

Where can I find the model number?

Start with the box label, invoice, warranty information, seller listing, or official product page marked “REF.” Do not assume every base inscription is the model number.

Can an S.T. Dupont serial number reveal the production year?

Do not assume so. Without authoritative documentation for that exact series, digit-to-year charts can be misleading and should not determine a purchase.

Why does a dealer reference sometimes have fewer digits?

Some dealer catalogs omit the leading zero. Official 016884, 020160N, and 027700 may therefore appear as 16884, 20160N, and 27700.

Does a matching serial number prove authenticity?

No. A serial is one consistency check. Construction, markings, finish, dimensions, mechanism, documentation, provenance, and expert review should also agree.

What if the reference does not match the finish or flame?

Pause the purchase. The item may be misidentified, altered, assembled from mismatched parts, or incorrectly documented; request an expert assessment.
